The overall aims of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) Working Group on Risk Assessment (WGRISK) are to advance the understanding of probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) and to support the application of PSA results to ensure the safety of nuclear installations. WGRISK therefore carries out tasks to support the exchange of information among experts from the member countries and other organizations, to assess the state-of-the-art and share experience from ongoing efforts to address current technical challenges related to risk analysis methodology, insights, and the application of PSA results.
This paper presents an overview of recently completed activities and their main conclusions and findings. The Working Group has updated its periodic status report, “Use and Development of PSA”, which presents a survey of PSA-related developments in the countries participating in WGRISK. Other tasks addressed the “Safety Assessment of Nuclear Installations Regarding Combinations of External Hazards” and “Dynamic PSA – Preparing for the Future”, which examined the outlook and challenges for the application of Dynamic PSA in risk-informed decision making. Work related to risk assessment for new and advanced reactors includes “PSA for Reactors of Singular Design” and “Treatment of Novel Aspects of Uncertainties in PSA.
Four activities nearing completion will additionally be highlighted:
- the “Level 3 PSA Modelling Benchmark” carried out to compare consequence modelling codes as well as examine the impact of modelling approaches;
- “DIGMORE – A Realistic Comparative Application of DI&C Modelling Approaches for PSA” aiming on supporting the improvement of the probabilistic assessment methodology by providing guidance for PSAs regarding digital I&C (DI&C) systems;
- the “Passive Systems Performance and Reliability” workshop held this spring, bringing together experimental, thermal-hydraulic/deterministic, and risk assessment perspectives;
- a joint expert workshop by the WGRISK and the OECD/NEA Database Projects ICDE, FIRE and CODAP on “Applicability and Applications of Operating Experience from the OECD/NEA Database Projects to Probabilistic Risk Assessment” for addressing the actual applications of data from these databases and the challenges to collect suitable data for application within PSA in WGRISK member countries.
