Techno-Economic Assessment of Nuclear-Sourced Hydrogen Production
Investor-grade technical and economic assessments of hydrogen production with nuclear energy are driving the interest of nuclear utilities and industrial hydrogen users. Process modeling and classical large-project economic evaluations indicate that carbon-free, pure hydrogen can be competitively produced at nuclear power plants. Thermal integration with the electrolysis plants is used to generate steam that is split into hydrogen and oxygen using high temperature electrolysis. The cost of hydrogen production at first-of-a-kind plants with federal cost-shared demonstrations will lead to Nth-of-a-kind plants that can be solely driven by capital investment returns. Hydrogen storage for power generation provides a competitive option to energy storage that is required with the build-up of renewable energy. Conversion of hydrogen to clean ammonia and synthetic fuels can also provide alternative revenue to the nuclear power plants.
