The PSAM 16 George Apostolakis Fellowship award winner for 2022 is Tatsuya Sakurahara.
Tatsuya Sakurahara is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering (NPRE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is the Chief Scientist in the Socio-Technical Risk Analysis (SoTeRiA) Research Laboratory ( https://soteria.npre.illinois.edu) at UIUC, contributing to multiple national and international projects to advance Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) science and applications for commercial nuclear power plants and advanced reactors. Dr. Sakurahara is the principal investigator on a SoTeRiA project entitled “Establishing a Risk-Informed Validation Research Hub,” funded by the Grainger College of Engineering at UIUC to support the nuclear industry and regulatory agency with the deployment of new technologies. Dr. Sakurahara received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Zahra Mohaghegh in NPRE at UIUC. Dr. Sakurahara holds a B.S. in Systems Innovation (2011) with a concentration in Environment and Energy Systems and an M.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering and Management (2013) from the University of Tokyo, Japan.

George Apostolakis
George Apostolakis Dr. Apostolakis is a professor emeritus of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Department and of the Engineering Systems Division of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as a Commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) from April 23, 2010 until June 30, 2014. From 1995 until 2010, he was a member and former Chairman (2001-2002) of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards of the NRC. He is currently the Head of the Nuclear Risk Research Center in Japan. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and the Society for Risk Analysis. He has received the Tommy Thompson Award and the Arthur Holly Compton Award from the American Nuclear Society. He is a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens. Dr. Apostolakis holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Science and Applied Mathematics (awarded in 1973) and a Master of Science degree in Engineering Science (1970) from the California Institute of Technology. He earned his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University in Athens, Greece, in 1969.
